A Little Chat with Jesus

Chat.

To talk, speak casually, to enjoy a relaxed back-and-forth flow of information.

Chat is different than a lecture, flies in defiance of a threat, and never leaves us feeling sour or distraught.

That’s why Jesus says in John 15:11:

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

Note this: Jesus does not say, “These things have I commanded you.” He doesn’t lift his finger and threaten, “I have spoken.”

Jesus’ intent is for joy: that his joy may be in us; and that in filling us with his joy, we may be filled to overflowing.

Filled, not just in the morning or at noontime. Not just when the sun is going down, but in every moment of the day.

What is Jesus referencing?

“I am the true vine …” Verse 1.

“My father prunes branches that don’t bear fruit …” Verse 2.

“You are already clean …” Verse 3.

“You can only bear fruit in me …” Verse 4.

“If you abide in me, you will bear much fruit …” Verse 5.

“If you don’t abide in me, you will be cast away …” Verse  6.

“If you abide in me, whatever you ask will be done …” Verse 7.

“Your fruit proves you are my disciples …” Verse 8.

Verses 9-10 reemphasize God’s love for us and that we should keep God’s commandments.

Remember what Jesus said? These things should bring us joy, full to overflowing.

Jesus is talking to us in love, a casual exchange of information, and his words leave us feeling treasured and secure in him. He is the vine, and we are the branches. Our joy is found only in him.

Jesus reassures us, because we are the treasure he gave his life for.
