Expectations of Greatness

Who’s the greatest of the great?

Martin Luther King Jr.? The man championed equal rights.

Mother Teresa? She is known as the Saint of Calcutta.

Or maybe you think back to George Washington. The foundations of the United States are firmly seated on his dedication to the new country he helped form.

Perhaps you envision more personal choices. Your Gramps, or Mom or Uncle Kevin. The greatest of the great. The reasons are as varied as the people you ask.

Colossians 1:20 offers us six reasons to consider Jesus as the greatest person who ever lived.

“And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

This verse contains only two lines, but the richness of what it portrays condenses the message of the Bible into one explosive sentence.

Through him.

Jesus is the only way to salvation. We find redemption through Christ and no other.

Reconcile to himself.

Jesus is the ultimate fixer. He is our standard bearer. He is our example for how to live.

Whether on earth or in heaven.

Certainly, Jesus came to offer us life eternal, but he cares about our earthly existence, also. We are alive now, not just then. We don’t trade one for the other.

Making peace.

Broken home … peace. Crumbling finances … peace. Physical illness … peace. You’re seeing it … everything is included.

By the blood of his cross.

Here’s the big one. Here’s what makes it real, makes it happen, shows the reality of Jesus’ love for humanity. He achieved all this … reconciliation and peace for all mankind in heaven and earth … by giving his life on the cross.

An innocent man died for us that we might know the peace of our sins forgiven. Wow! Talk about the greatest of the great!

Now it’s your turn. Expectations of greatness. Give your life to Christ and see what a difference you can make to those around you.
