We are people of reason.
That’s the difference between us and the animals.
We can reason out situations, to know right from wrong, and to make conscious decisions about what to do next.
The more we know, the better choices we can make.
How do we get more knowledge? That’s easy. Let’s look to 2 Peter 1:3:
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.”
So, we might ask, what’s Peter trying to say to us? Let’s break it down so there’s no misunderstanding.
1. Knowledge comes from God’s divine power. Period.
2. God freely grants his knowledge unto us. Freely.
3. Some knowledge is about the physical world and some about the spiritual. Both are from God.
4. We become wise when we choose to listen to the One who calls us. His name is Jesus.
There is no knowledge that doesn’t come from God. Even those who don’t consider God’s presence as a reality still get their knowledge from the Father, even if they don’t know it.
It’s like gravity. For centuries, no one knew what it was, but not knowing or believing didn’t stop gravity from holding them on the surface of the earth.
Or magnetism. Before men understood magnetism even existed, it was still there, and they used it in lodestones to find their way around the world.
God is the same. His knowledge is there, and mankind can use it without believing in him.
Here’s the difference. We become wise in our knowledge when we believe in the One who calls us to his own glory and excellence.
We become wise when we strive to model our lives on the Savior who died for us.
We are people of reason. It’s reasonable to choose Jesus today.
