We like stuff for free.
Getting an offer of a free cruise or a prize in a contest is exciting. Wow, we think. We didn’t expect it, and it’s a pleasant surprise. Mostly, however, we feel we’ve earned it. We placed our name in the pot, or we entered to see if winning was possible.
Like a lottery winner. They feel they deserve their prize, because they committed their money to purchase their chance.
“I’ve been buying tickets for years! It’s about time I got my reward. I deserve all of it!”
Other things we don’t work for. They’re simply there. The anonymous gift from a stranger, the surprise sale we only discover at the check-out register, or a cinnamon roll on our desk in the morning, a pick-me-up gift from a coworker.
It’s not the lottery, but those are the freebies we truly appreciate. They are unexpected, and they give us the warm fuzzies each time we remember them.
God’s warm fuzzy comes in Ephesians 2:8-9.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
There’s no lottery ticket necessary. We don’t have to enter the Publisher’s Clearing House contest, put in overtime hours, or clean up our financial accounts before salvation can be ours.
It’s free, a gift, something offered to everyone under the same conditions, no matter our circumstance.
Ask.
Believe.
Receive.
That’s really all it takes. We shift from the role of lost to redeemed just that quickly. Certainly, there’s more afterward, and our salvation comes with standards we must uphold, but it is a gift, one offered to us for free.
Let’s take advantage of it today.
The time for Christ is now. Let’s accept him into our lives.
