Water is a necessity.
We can’t live without it. It’s vital for drinking, yes, but also for food preparation and sanitation.
When there’s no water available, we’ll do whatever it takes to get more.
Even if that means we get out our shovel and begin to dig.
See, in even the driest environments, there’s water. It’s just not always waiting at the surface, easy to access. The water table beneath our feet is covered by soil and rock, and we must move some dirt to get at it. Our source of refreshment might be twenty feet down, a hundred, or a thousand, but it’s there, once we put our back into it.
The same principle applies in our daily walk. Life is good. The best parts aren’t always out for easy pickings, however. We must break a sweat, put a little muscle into it, and work to get at what we want.
We must dig a well for the best things in life.
James 1:12 reveals this truth to us:
“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
What do we need to begin our well, to dig down to reach God’s water table? Here’s a list to get started.
- Patience, for our reward takes time and effort.
- Determination, because life will trip us up.
- Kindness, which eases our way with others.
- Commitment, the sort that never wavers.
- Trust, that God “has our back” and will be there in our time of struggle.
Jesus said he’s the water of life. That’s an analogy that makes sense to us, especially when we’re thirsty, the sun is hot, and there’s no water to be seen. We’ll trade everything for a sip of refreshment.
Jesus is our renewal, like a cup of water to a thirsty traveler. Let’s get out our shovel and discover him today.
