The True Bread

Knock-offs are wonderful. They allow us to have something that resembles the real thing without the price.

Here’s the drawback. The knock-off looks good for a time, but it doesn’t hold its value like the real deal.

On a reality show filmed in Texas, an intrepid pair found a pair of iron statuary from the Victorian Age. Excited at the exquisite condition of the pieces, they carted them to an expert to have them appraised. His verdict? The pieces were, indeed, of excellent manufacture, but instead of iron, they were made of tailings, a cheaper version of the real thing. Their value? A hundredth of the genuine article. Instead of $40,000, he placed a value on them of $400.

John 6:30-32 reveals the real McCoy:

“They said therefore unto him, What sign do you then show, that we may see, and believe you? what do you work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.”

Wow, wow, wow! What is our true bread? Jesus. Salvation. Life in Christ.

Jesus’ detractors implied that Jesus’ power wasn’t from heaven, but Moses’ manna was, and Jesus set them on their ear. Our Lord is no knock-off, pretty in the present, but worth little in the future. He’s our original gem, the valued jewel, and a prize that will hold up in an expert’s appraisal. He’s the real thing, the one mimicked and copied, yet never duplicated. He’s our Savior and our King.

When we taste the salvation of Jesus, we’ve eaten of the true bread of life, and we’ll live with him evermore.
