Our Faith in Christ

How do we obtain our eternal reward?

Is it in the level of our tithes? Or because we taught Sunday school for forty years?

Maybe it’s in the souls we won to the kingdom, or all the nights we served at the downtown mission. That would do it, get the Lord’s attention, and get us into heaven.

Not according to scripture.

Paul is the master wordsmith. He understands language, and he can craft a sentence beyond compare. Not only that, he can weave meanings into his words and illustrate the truths of the Lord with clarity and precision.

Romans 4:3, 7 give us the core of our faith in Christ:

“For what says the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Saying, blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.”

Abraham gained his righteousness by trusting in God. It was that simple. He had faith, and that imbued him with righteousness. For the modern Christian, we find our faith in Christ, for only he can forgive our wrongdoing. This is made possible by his death on the cross. That’s it. It’s that simple, with no confusing beads to count or repeated prayers to pray. We have faith, and we become part of the family of God.

Sure, we must maintain a righteous lifestyle based on the example of Christ, but our righteousness happens when we believe and trust in Christ. We have it, because we “believed God, and it was counted unto [us] for righteousness.”

When we step out in faith, Christ is there to guide our every footstep.
