Our Drink Offering Poured Out

Timing is vital.

Asking for the hand of a beautiful woman during a movie just as Dracula is about to bite his victim will sink our proposal like a waterlogged canoe.

We must read the signs around us and be perceptive in what we say and do. That includes in the things of the Lord, also.

Do we witness, today, now? Should we give in the latest offering? Is it a good time for our child to be baptized? Should we go to the mission field when we feel the call or when we have the funding?

The drink offering in the Bible was only to be offered when entering the promised land (Numbers 15). It was a special offering that celebrated a homecoming for those called of God.

In 2 Timothy 4:6, Paul is wrapping up his earthly existence. He’s making his final comments on his life and giving his closing instructions about the work of Christ. He says:

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.”

Paul’s timing was always exquisite. He knew how to read people and situations. He read this one like a well-thumbed book. He knew it was his time to celebrate his homecoming with Jesus. He would soon enter the promised land. He was willing and ready to cross from this life into the arms of his Savior and King.

We may be more familiar with Paul’s next words in 2 Timothy 4:7:

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

When our life is based in Christ, and we’ve lived our utmost for him, the timing is always perfect for our homecoming with Jesus. Timing is vital. Now is the perfect opportunity to accept Christ as Savior and begin a new life in him. We’re pouring out our drink offering of repentance as a bridge unto our King.

There’s no time like the present to step out in faith and live our lives for the Lord.
