Leaving Christ on the Cross

Giving a birthday gift is an act of love.

So is a Christmas gift, or one presented at Valentine’s Day. We give our gift as much for ourselves as for the recipient. The joy we receive when it’s opened is equal to or greater than the thrill of the one removing the wrapping.

If our gift is tossed to the side, our pain is equally great.

2 Peter 2:21 reveals God’s disappointment when we leave Christ on the cross:

“For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.”

If we accept Christ, then lose our way...  If we believe, then say it wasn’t real...  If we offer Jesus everything, then try to take it back...  If we give our testimony...  If we pray for healing...  If we witness...  If we teach a church nursery class...  If we ignore the hurting...  If we mistreat those...

Whether we lose our salvation or simply lose our joy in Christ as a result of turning away from him is for each believer to decide. This truth doesn’t change: If we turn away after choosing to follow Christ, we leave him on the cross, his arms pierced and his side bloody. We reject the gift of God, and the Creator gazes upon us with disappointment and sorrow.

Salvation is a gift of God. When we treasure Christ’s sacrifice, the heavens rejoice in us.

Excerpt of the Day

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
