Impressions count, especially first impressions.
Meeting someone new? Clean clothes and freshly combed hair go a long way.
Strangers form an opinion of us with a glance, and while most of those opinions evaporate when they look away, others carry more weight with us.
“We’ve known each other for years. Don’t be so dull.”
“Honey, when we married, you were so toned. Maybe you should put that donut back in the box.”
“I know you love singing in the shower, but please … just don’t.”
In the broader picture, cultural opinions can affect how we think and respond.
“There are too many unwanted children, so fix it before they are born.”
“Church on Sunday morning? Hey, dude, that’s my time.”
“Prayer? I think I’ll trust my PhD, thank you very much.”
Hebrews 13:6 (NIV) says:
“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’”
God’s standards and expectations must always come first in our lives. Not our best friend’s, a coworker’s, or a national organization with an agenda.
We can’t be afraid to stand up for God and biblical values when pressured by culture or people’s opinions.
The last part of this verse is the cheeky comeback to anyone who confronts us when we stand for Christ and the Word of the Lord.
“What can mere mortals do to me?”
We are of Christ. He has already won the war. Our job—our assignment—is to load our mortars, dig in to our foxhole, and ensure that the encampment of the devil is pounded by righteous living, the Word of God, and daily prayer to our Divine King.
Christ is our standard. His opinion is the only one that counts.
Let’s be opinionated for him every day.
