No Longer an Outlaw but a Child of the King

What do you picture when I say outlaw?

Maybe it’s an Old West character, someone Sherrif Matt Dillon would pursue.

Or you see Jesse James, gun in hand, taking from anyone with money to their name.

Then there’s Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone, Jack Sparrow. Some of these we might call gangsters or pirates, but they are outlaws all.

Why?

They are outside the law, of course.

Imagine someone speeding down the freeway, too fast for the patrol office to chase … outlaw? There’s no western hat, six-shooter, or spurs, but certainly they are outside the law.

Okay, then, let’s shift this to the Christian. Can we be outside the law even as we attend church on Sundays and even teach a Sunday school class?

We’re not robbing banks or taking out people who haven’t wronged us, or anything so dastardly. We’ve tied no one to a railroad track, and we’ve never kicked a dog.

Outlaws? Christians? Never!

Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV) and see:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

Do you still harbor resentment towards a coworker who gossiped behind your back?

The new creation has come: The old has gone.

Did the pastor step on your toes, and you groused about it all week?

The new creation has come: The old has gone.

Have you sent your spouse to the sofa because you felt they didn’t give you due credit in your marriage?

The new creation has come: The old has gone.

Here’s the thing: Each of these are outside the law of God. They don’t reflect how God has instructed us to live.

Outlaw to Child of the King. If you are in Christ, then you are a new creation. Today is your time to begin living like it.

Let’s start today!
