Britta has made a fortune creating sweet water from bitter. No matter what comes out of our tap, we can strain it through a Britta filter, and it runs across our tongue as sweet as the day is long.
What is Britta’s true success? Removing the gunk that has infiltrated something that once was pure.
James 3:11 tells us:
“Does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?”
Imagine a water bottling company. We might recognize Ozarka, Poland Springs, and Fiji, all companies that have become profitable bringing us water from a sweet source.
If they pumped their water from just anywhere, they’d soon go belly up. They can only get the best water from the purest places.
In James, that source is our mouth, and the water is the words we speak. Are the words we let pass over our lips profitable for distribution to the masses, or are they poisoned and bitter, fit for nothing better than pouring down the drain?
There is a solution, the Jesus filter. It’s rather like Britta’s water filter. We pour ourselves in, and as we strain ourselves through Jesus, all the gunk is pulled out and filtered away; and we are left with a sweet-tasting flavor that is pleasurable to anyone who wishes to give us a taste.
That bitter spring is inherent in our humanity. From our natural man run rivers of anger, malice, and jealously. It’s only when we allow the salvation of Christ to come between us and the world that the sweetness of Jesus can flow from our bitter source.
Our Lord changes everything he touches, and that includes each person who chooses to walk with him.
Jesus changes our bitter nature to one that flows with the sweetness of the purest honey.
