Space Mountain. It’s a Disney ride of thrilling proportions.
A roller coaster ride in the dark is both scary as well as exhilarating, because we know what’s going to happen, but we can’t see when it’s going to hit is.
We love Space Mountain in the dark.
Yet Google “space mountain inside lights on” and it looks ordinary. The magic of the mystery is gone. The light changes everything.
Our lives are the same. When we are born, it’s like walking through the door of Space Mountain. As a child, we have no idea what’s coming up. Everything’s a surprise. We are jerked this way, then that. At thirteen the gears of the ride click in, and we know something special is about to happen.
We are vaulted into our teenage years, with blind corners and fast downhill passages, the wind whipping past us. It’s fun, and we want to do it again.
By the time we get to be adults, sometimes the surprises of living life in the dark begin to wear thin. We want to see the upcoming corners. We want to know what to expect.
Jesus is the light that brings us the truth of who and what we are, and why we were created in the first place.
Titus 1:2 is our first glimmer of illumination:
“[We have] hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began.”
Numbers 23:19 assures us the lights will stay on.
“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
Genesis 1:3 is when he first turned on the switch:
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
Revelation 1:8 shows us the shining brilliance of his eternal glory:
“ ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’ ”
We can live life in the dark, like Space Mountain, and like the iconic Disney ride, it’s exciting for a time. Yet, when we want to live in the light, Jesus is the switch that reveals the truth. We are more than participants on a blind and crazy ride in the dark. We are children of the King, and he wants to guide us by the brilliance of his eternal person. He wants to light our way so that we can see exactly what’s ahead.
When Jesus shines on us, we can see the way that we must walk, even when it’s not where we want to go.
