Water from the Rock

There are times when we run out of options. We’re between that proverbial rock and a hard place. We have nowhere to go, and if we did, no way to get there.

We’re ripe for the picking, and the world is picking on us.

Much of the land Israel wandered through was parched desert. Water was scarce, and at times, seasonal, at best. In times of drought, it became worse, and people died. It was the worst imaginable death possible.

Yet God didn’t leave his children alone. Isaiah 48:21 tells us:

“And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them: he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out.”

The children of Israel must have been filled with desperation at times. They surveyed the landscape around them, only to find desolation. Where was their God? Was their salvation to be found, or would they reach their end, their bones turning to dust in the dissected soil?

The scripture says, “And they thirsted not…”

That’s simple. There was no thirst. Water was provided. Even from impossible sources, God brought forth a nourishing supply of the necessary things to sustain life in an impossible environment.

He still does the same for us. Our marriage is on the rocks? God cleaves our problems in twain, and healing comes forth. We get fired from our job? Training for a new position will open up. Illness attacks our body? New medical miracles come on the market every day.

God is our miracle worker. He provides when we see no way for our answer to happen. He is our source in our time of need. When we walk through our spiritual desert, he will cause his blessings to flow out of the rock of barrenness that surrounds us.

When God speaks, water flows from the rock, and we are satisfied.
