We love sticky notes. Want to tell a busy spouse we love her? Place a sticky note on the bathroom mirror. Need to suggest a change in a colleague’s interoffice report? Don’t write on it…sticky note to the rescue!
Sticky notes were an accident. The glue was intended to be a super-strong adhesive for the aerospace industry. However, the Acrylate Copolymer Microspheres that make up the adhesive were too weak to be used for their intended purpose.
The new adhesive did have one interesting characteristic. It was triggered by pressure and able to be removed and reused over and over.
Interesting, especially as some Christians consider sin and forgiveness in the same way. We can stick on our salvation for Sunday morning, and on Monday, store it away to be reused the following weekend. During the week, we can enjoy Sticky Note Sin, the sort we can remove at will when it’s time to show our salvation once more as we sing in the choir.
In Deuteronomy 24:1-4, Moses talks to us about Sticky Note Sin. He speaks about divorce, but the principle is the same. A man can take a wife, give her a bill of divorcement, and she is free to marry again. If she displeases her second husband, he can send her off, also, but she’s not a sticky note to become reattached to Hubby #1. Once he has cast her off, that should be the end of that.
What do we have trouble casting off? What’s our Sticky Note Sin? Cigarettes? Anger? Illicit websites? Gambling? We fall at the altar, cast it upon the Lord, and walk away from it, cleansed and new. Then we find it again, and we test the adhesive to find it’s still sticky. Bam! We slap it on our forehead, and it becomes part of us once more.
Sticky Note Sin.
Sticky notes were an accident. Sin is not. When we pick it up, it’s our fault. Once we let it go, it needs to be gone forever.
When we fall into the same sins over and over, eventually they become part of who we are.
