Promises Unfulfilled

Campaign promises are the most tenuous sort around.

It seems that politicians will say whatever their constituents want just to earn their votes, and people want to believe them.

Lower taxes! Benefits will go up! All new roads! Lower health costs! Something for everyone!

The world promises us happiness if we chase after material things. Health, wealth, fame, and fortune! Just follow the world’s rules, and we’ll all have a good time.

We love the promises, and we want to believe they are true. We fail to consider whether the promises we’re hearing are even feasible. Then, when the campaign promises begin to falter, we groan and say we knew they were too good to be real.

The Word of God says the promises of the world are empty. James 3:15 tells us:

“This wisdom [of worldly security] descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, [and] devilish.”

That’s pretty point blank. If we’re promised any form or type of salvation or happiness that doesn’t come through the cross, it’s not advice from the Father. No matter how appealing it is, if our new scheme for success isn’t based on Christ, it’s of the devil.

Promises sprouting from humanity’s efforts to improve the race will leave us unfulfilled, no matter how good they seem. We need to be cynical of anything that sounds too good to be true.

All promises of true worth are found in the Bible, and we can trust that they will come to pass, yea and amen. When we need something to hold to in our time of weakness and despair, our only firm foundation is the Word and the truths we find inside.

Let’s trust in Christ and the cross instead of the world and its wastrels.

Excerpt of the Day

When we fall into the same sins over and over, eventually they become part of who we are.
