Trauma tries to take over our lives.
Each day.
We awake to the serenity of a golden sunrise, and before we know it, the kids come awake. The morning becomes a terror, and the day refuses to slow down.
Or the car has a flat on the way to work. Or our boss decides we need another project to fill our time.
Or a bill comes in, there’s an upset stomach, or the roof leaks, etc.
We want to scream, “Take me away! It’s all too much.”
Jesus agrees. That’s part of his purpose in our lives. Hear what he tells us in John 16:33.
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
We can find reassurance in the Master’s words. We will have peace. How? Through our relationship with him.
Christ didn’t come to change the world, not the one we live in day to day. He came to overcome the world, to best it at its very core. Jesus came to enable us to walk through the muck that tries to stain us and to come to the other side of our situation still praising him.
We are to take heart. Jesus endured the worst the world could offer, and he remained steadfast in his unity with the Father.
We will have problems. The water heater will go out. Our tire will go flat. The kids will be noisy, and our boss will require extra projects of us. None of this impacts our relationship with Jesus.
Let’s repeat his words. “I have overcome the world.”
That needs to become our mantra, also. We have overcome the world. We are successful in Jesus. The peace of Jesus is ours when we rely on him for our firm purchase and solid foundation in everything we do.
The world tears us down, but Jesus lifts us up.
