A thunderstorm on a golf course can be terrifying.
The clouds grow dark, thunder rumbles, and flashes of lightning rip across the sky.
We have no protection, none at all. There’s no way out of the destruction.
A devastating illness can feel exactly that way. Or a financial disaster, our retirement accounts vanishing in an imploding market.
How are we expected to survive if our spouse leaves us, and we have no shoulder to cry on? The world grows black, our prospects seem truncated, and every event is a potential for another loss.
Philippians 4:6 gives us hope in our darkness.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
Let’s look at this verse more closely.
Do not be anxious is about our faith. We must trust that God will handle the situation.
Prayer is turning our situation over to God, but supplication goes even further. We must be earnest, returning to our prayer closet over and over until we get the answer we seek.
The key to making this work is the thanksgiving we offer unto God. His heart is moved by our gratitude. When we lift him up, we are elevated out of our situation. We draw closer to God, distanced from our tribulation.
So, let’s do it. We might be on life’s golf course, totally exposed to the elements, but we have a lightning rod God. The brilliance of oncoming disasters may flash around us, but our Father will absorb the fiery darts of the enemy, and we will be safe in our Lord.
Our God is our protector, and he is our safe haven in the crashing thunder of life’s storms.
