Taking Level Flight

English Audio Version

No one likes to fly in a storm.

The plane jumps, things bounce around, and there’s no way to sleep when the turbulence messes with our head.

We want smooth air for an enjoyable flight.

Then there are those times when the pilot flies wonky for a reason. The plane can simulate zero gravity by a steep ascent and then falling at a precise rate.

And what about takeoff, when the nose points into the air, or landing, when we must descend at a sharp, downward angle?

Arrgh! Level flight, we cry!

Isaiah 40:4 tells us God hears our plea.

“Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.”

Life is like that airplane ride. Sometimes we fly in a storm, and other times the pilot intentionally takes a wonky path. Then there’s the takeoff and landing to scramble our sense of up and down.

We can’t avoid the realities of our daily existence. There will be ups and downs, whether the start of a new project or when a relationship winds down. Even so, it’s the level flight we treasure, when the uneven places are made level, and the rough places become a distant memory.

When we’re walking together with God, the valley times and mountain peaks will be smoother, and he’ll ease our travels past each one. That’s when we know God is with us, our secure protection and calm weather despite the storm.

God is our pilot, and with him at the helm, our safety in all situations is assured.
