Our Stone Retaining Wall

English Audio Version

One rock is a small thing. Even if it’s sizeable, we can wrestle it around, move it into a new position, and place it where we want.

It’s not even in our way, not really. It doesn’t prevent us walking past it or keep us from mowing our yard. We can play catch with our children and forget the stone’s there.

A bunch of stones, however, that’s a different matter. When we stack a wall of stones, pile them high, they become a barrier. Make them tall enough, and no one’s getting past.

That’s how faith works. If we believe for a small thing, it’s easy to set aside the answer and continue living as we always have. Our faith in God is increased, but only by a small amount. We will continue to rely on our job, our investments, and our can-do attitude to make our way through life.

Strong faith is a stone retaining wall, formed of many faith-building moments. Repeatedly facing trouble and depending on God to get us through builds a barrier against the world.

We learn to depend on God in every situation.

James 1:2-4 describes our faith foundation.

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

Each time we trust God and come out on the other side, that’s one more stone on our faith retaining wall. The bigger the problem, the bigger the stone, and the sturdier our wall becomes.

Jesus is our faithful Lord, and in him there’s nothing we cannot do.
