Hurricanes can be massively destructive.
In the summer of 2018, Hurricane Lane slammed Hawaii, and the damage was notable. Beach houses tumbled into the sea, rockslides blocked roadways, and flooding was rampant.
Later that same summer, an even bigger storm was aimed at North Carolina. Hurricane Florence pummeled the East Coast. More than a million people evacuated barrier islands and low-lying areas in the affected states.
Excessive rain and power outages impacted homes and businesses far inland.
As the storm approached the shore, and the seas churned, news reports revealed the fear of those in the path of the upcoming destruction. What would be left? What would they find when they returned?
Did anyone outside of the danger zone care?
Psalm 112:7 reassures us that when we have God as our source of strength, we have nothing to fear.
“[The man who fears the Lord] is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.”
Hurricane Florence changed course at the last hour and battered South Carolina. That was out of man’s control. No one could hold back the waves or turn the winds aside. The rain fell where it wanted in both states, causing widespread flooding, and all the people could do was hunker down for safety.
That’s our everyday life. We can’t control what comes at us. What we can do is trust in God. We gather under his protecting hand, and when the storm passes by, we emerge to deal with the aftermath. The difference is that we know God is in charge, and he watches over us.
Our faith is secure, and our heart is firm when we trust in the Lord.
We can focus on the future rather than fear what hasn’t yet come our way.
God is the sunshine through every storm that overshadows us.
