Visit an East Coast beach.
Or drive on down to the Texas Gulf Coast. Galveston, maybe, or Padre Island.
Find a place you can catch the sunrise across the sea. Wake up early, get on the sand, and watch the first moments as the sun breaks across the water.
It’s an awe-inspiring sight. What’s especially momentous is seeing how fast the sun climbs above the waves. In a handful of seconds, you can watch the sun stretch skyward, exposing more and more of its fiery surface.
You can sense the spinning of the earth with the speed of the sun’s leap into the sky.
The sun’s appearance is most beautiful when fingers of storm clouds roll across the horizon. The rays of the sun flash through the broken clouds, and they appear brighter because of the storm.
Psalm 57:1 tells us to focus on the sun, not on the clouds in the way.
“Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.”
The storms across the ocean may or may not find their way to our beach. Either way, the sun is still there. It will break through the clouds. Occasionally we must take refuge, but the sun will return, and we’ll be amazed how quickly it brightens everything around us.
God’s presence is the same. When he arrives on the scene, the clouds vanish as if they never were.
We find God when we look for him. He will be at our side during our troubles.
