The Successful Turtle

English Audio Version

We hear that the early bird gets the worm, but no one talks about the turtle who takes the top prize.

In the story of the hare and the tortoise, the hare got such a fantastic lead that he was lulled into complacency. The tortoise, instead, won the race.

It’s the story of diligence versus impulsiveness, that of studied consideration up next to the flash-in-the-pan.

It’s the tale of college, an apprenticeship, and years of dogged determination, of paying our dues when we’d rather strike it rich.

Proverbs 21:5 speaks to the price of success:

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.”

One-hit-wonders sometimes make it to the marquee. It’s those with staying power that remain there.

We must serve as the youth pastor before the pulpit becomes ours. We might witness ten times or a hundred before we break the ice. A cathedral isn’t built in a day, and neither is the Bible memorized in a month.

We can’t be a Billy Graham without a lifetime of righteous living. We must play the part of the turtle before we get to run like the hare. Our path to heaven happens one day at a time, one scripture at a time, one redeemed soul at a time.

Our next footstep is the only one we need to worry about. The rest of life’s path will become clear if we keep our eyes on Jesus.
