The world sends us mixed messages:
- If we party hard enough, we’ll find happiness among our friends.
- The larger the house, the better our coworkers will respect and look up to us.
- A faster and more luxurious car is the best bragging right there is.
- The flashier the vacation pictures we post online, the more people will want to be like us.
We also get these:
- Start saving for retirement as soon as we earn our first paycheck.
- Live on less than we make, every month, every year, and without fail.
- Rescue the planet by recycling paper and plastic and give generously to humane causes.
- Save an animal; become a vegetarian.
How do we sift out the important things in life? How do we become wise enough to know how to live?
Proverbs 4:7 gives us a good first step:
“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.”
Wisdom is simple. Merriam-Webster tells us it’s having the good sense to be able to judge inner qualities and relationships. That’s something we can all learn.
Insight is to be able to see into a situation, to understand what’s going on, so that we can make good decisions.
- Should we attend that party?
- Can we afford that house?
- Is that car necessary?
- Who’s our vacation for, us or them?
See, it’s not hard. Once we can answer these questions, wisdom begins to blossom.
The best decision we’ll ever make is to let Christ be our guide.
