Humans are pretenders by nature.
It’s called society; culture; good manners; the rules by which we live.
Let’s take that third one, manners. We can have bad ones, and we can cultivate good ones. An old axiom says that a cultured man is simply someone who thinks one thing and says another.
Will it really come off well if a teacher expresses her true opinion about each of the kindergartners who walk into her class? Now, before we point fingers, how about our own children?
“What’s wrong, Mommy?”
“Nothing.”
“But you’re crying.”
“Not anymore.” Bright smile, even as the divorce decree lies on the table. “Mommy’s okay.”
Remember that first line: Humans are pretenders… society… good manners… protecting the children, even when we tell them things will be all right when we know better. Or when we assure our boss we have the job in hand... or the check’s in the mail... or that we enjoyed the spinach... or we're glad to give up our seat on the bus...
Sometimes our pretense takes a darker tone: “No, it’s not a paramid scheme. Your investments are secure...”
Psalm 62:8 tells us that if we trust in man, we’ll be let down, for
“...those of low estate are but a breath; and those of high estate are but a delusion.”
If we believe in men, we’ll be disappointed. It’s only when we find our solid rock in Christ that our trust is truly secure.
