No man is a rock.
Or, maybe, that’s no man is an island.
Some men are rocks, hard-headed and determined to go their own way, thinking they are self-sufficient and needing no one else.
John Donne, the 17th-century English author who first said, No Man Is an Island, was correct when he penned his inimitable phrase. We need people. We need others around us for emotional and spiritual support.
Paul wrote the book of Philippians from a prison cell, overseen by the Roman Praetorian guard. He was surrounded by people, but he was essentially sequestered. He was isolated and cut off from his fellow believers.
Yet, he wasn’t alone.
Philippians 1:7 reveals the state of Paul’s heart:
“It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.”
We need our fellow believers. We need Christian warriors to stand at our side. When the devil battles against us, and we feel we are alone, it’s those who walk with us, who’ve joined us on our island, who have become our rock in our time of trouble, that will keep us steady in the Lord.
It’s not in standing tall; it’s standing together that gets us to Glory.
