Railroad Track Love

Damsel in distress!

The thought of being tied to a railroad track facing an oncoming train is horrendous.

The only way to rescue the person tied to the track is to run toward the oncoming train. We must risk getting closer to the disaster to rescue those we love.

What are our railroad tracks? And what are the trains that barrel at us head on, bright lights in our eyes, and horns blaring at us to get out of the way?

In the Back to the Future franchise, one train destroyed a horse-drawn buggy driven by a school teacher. Another took out the time machine, leaving it in a shambles. In The Matrix series of films, the hero battled on a subway track, barely finding safety before the train roared by. In making the 2014 film Midnight Rider, camera assistant Sarah Jones lost her life on a live train track because she couldn’t get to safety quickly enough. They were filming on a trestle, and there was nowhere to go except into the water or remain on the track.

Living life is what we do. That’s our train track. The trains are family, work, interpersonal relationships, and finances. Holidays barrel at us, along with vacations, car repairs, and natural disasters. Then we face down addictions and desires. How can we survive?

Deuteronomy 6:5 gives us our safety net:

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

With God as our focus, we can run toward the train. That’s our method of rescue for others. To get them off the track and to safety, we have to risk ourselves. We must live with them; get involved; travel their footsteps; invest in their days; and be there for them.

Railroad track love is all about living on the trestle, risking everything for those we care about, and trusting in God to be our way of escape. When we hold on to him, the train will rattle our teeth, but we’ll still be there when it passes by.
