The Fantastic Dream

Dreams don’t often feel real.

More to the point, dreams aren’t real. Our minds put together bits and pieces of things we experience, string them together with our worries, and let us live them in the middle of the night. It’s why we can fly in our dreams; why we meet people who died long ago; and why Smurfs and unicorns appear as we snooze.

That doesn’t mean dreams are silly or unimportant. In the classic movie Back to the Future, Doc Brown saw his flux capacitor—what makes times travel possible—in a dream. How many times do people say, “Let me sleep on it,” only to wake up and have the answer they need? That’s because dreams work. They help us solve our everyday problems. Fantastic dreams are what enable us to chase incredible solutions to unsolvable situations.

In the book of Daniel, Jerusalem was overrun by the king of Babylon. Daniel and three of his companions—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego of fiery furnace note—wound up in the Babylonian court. There, Daniel interpreted numerous dreams.

They weren’t always good ones.

King Nebuchadnezzar dreamed twice, and both times, Daniel’s interpretation came true. The first dream said the king would rule over all the earth, and the second told of his future as a madman eating grass in the field.

No one wants to dream bad dreams. We only want the good ones. Let’s look, however, at Nebuchadnezzar’s second dream. The king had become fixated on his own glory. He began to consider himself as a god. His dream was his warning that his kingdom was from God, and God could take it away.

The king’s dream came true. Only when Nebuchadnezzar looked to God as his source did the Father lift him up once again to rule over his kingdom.

Daniel 4:34 tells us:

“I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me...”

What do we dream about? Perhaps it’s time to take notice. When we pay attention to our dreams, we can find the voice of God speaking to us in promises, in warnings, and in ideas for the future.

It’s through Christ that we’ll find ourselves living out the promptings of our Father’s fantastic plans for our tomorrows.
