We are worth something. The time we spend at our job is valuable. Our skills are what earn us cash. The higher our skill level, the greater our income.
We find how valued we are in our paycheck.
Now, not everyone gets a paycheck, or…do they?
Mom prepares a sack lunch for her daughter, and for the extra homemade cookie inside, she gets a hug after school. Paycheck!
An actor is nominated for an Academy Award, and on the special night, everyone cheers for the winner. Paycheck!
A rancher has a horse enduring a difficult birth, and he stays the night with her, to see the sun rise on a healthy mother and foal. Paycheck!
None of these people have received monetary compensation for their good deeds, and at the same time, each one was rewarded with something invaluable to them. They received pay for skills used wisely.
How about when we use our skills unwisely? Do we get rewarded then? Do we still receive a paycheck?
The addict pumping morphine into her veins. Paycheck! The terrorist in a shootout with police. Paycheck! The promiscuous husband watching his wife walk out the door. Paycheck!
God’s Word says we receive our spiritual paycheck written out and signed by the Father in heaven. What we receive depends on how we use the skills he gives us while we walk the face of this world.
Romans 12:19 cautions us:
“Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’ ”
If we chase after people we feel have wronged us, we have broken God’s rules. Paycheck!
Revelation 6:10-11 takes us to the end of days:
“They cried out with a loud voice, ‘O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?’ Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.”
God has a payday scheduled, and his checks are already prepared. If we are patient, we will receive our reward. Paycheck!
Romans 13:3-4 is our warning:
“Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain.”
We can be fired from the job. We must perform our duties to get our reward. Paycheck!
Matthew 10:28 tells us to beware counterfeits:
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
We work for God, and he will not cash bogus checks. Paycheck!
Romans 12:1 is our job description for promotion to a higher position:
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
We do that, and we receive a raise. We receive God’s love and the promise of life everlasting in the arms of the Father. Paycheck!
God will pay us and in abundance. We simply need to stay on the job.
