We check the mirror each morning to see if our collar lies flat, our hair is orderly, and the colors of our outfit match.
We want to look our best when we exit the front door. It makes a difference, you see, in how people treat us. When we look the part of a successful business owner or an affluent shopper, we elevate the treatment we receive from others.
How can we improve the way we treat ourselves?
We find the answer in Psalm 119:6.
“Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.”
This is more than a spiritual quip, an empty platitude that we spout to appear in touch with our “God” side. There’s fact and real-life advice in this verse.
Let’s start with the last half, “… having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.”
This works in every area of life.
- Drive the speed limit. You won’t worry when you see a patrol car.
- Respect the marriage bed. Unexpected texts won’t worry you.
- Don’t cheat on taxes. Letters from the IRS will be good news.
- Treat employees well. They will benefit your company.
- Don’t gossip. Your friends won’t wonder if you can be trusted.
- Don’t lie. You won’t have to keep track of what you’ve said.
- Don’t steal. You’ll avoid jail time.
It also works in the spiritual realm.
- Study God’s Word. You’ll understand the nature of the Father.
- Attend church. Your children will respect God’s place in your life.
- Spend time in prayer. You’ll become attuned to God’s direction for you.
Already you’re feeling better about yourself. Shame is no longer part of who you are. You are what you appear to others, and that’s a very good thing.
Align yourself with God, and he will become your biggest fan.
