How do we please others?
It depends on who they are. What might please our boss may have little impact on our spouse.
Our 4-year-old requires something completely different from us than our teenager.
Our dog is likely pleased with a tussle around the ears and a walk in the park. A treat and a game of fetch help, too.
We can find 5 Ways to Please God in James 4:7-8.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”
Let’s turn our 5 ways into a list for easy remembrance.
- Submit to God.
- Resist the devil.
- Draw near to God.
- Cleanse our hands.
- Purify our hearts.
Now, let’s restate each one for relevance in our modern world.
1. Read the Bible. Do what it says.
2. Refuse to fall into wrongdoing. Make good choices each day.
3. Find time for prayer. Consider what God would have you do throughout the day.
4. Stop doing things you know don’t fit within Godly principles.
5. Our intents and desires, not just our outward actions, must be patterned after the life of Christ.
There. Now all you need to do is get out there and live it.
If your life hasn’t changed since accepting salvation, ask yourself why. Then pull out your list of 5 Ways to Please God and give it another try.
God’s instructions are perfectly clear. Do what the Father says, and our Lord will be pleased with us.
