Several years ago, singer Lionel Richie crooned a sultry ballad that included the words, “Once, twice, three times a lady.”
The Shadows, Isaac Hayes, and Johnny Mathis performed the song in the 1980s, but the original version was released by the Commodores in 1978, with Richie singing lead, topping the charts for two weeks that August.
The song also reached the top of the charts in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Richie’s inspiration for the song was his mother, when his father toasted her as “a great lady, a great mother, and a great friend.”
Can people say that about us as Christians, that we exemplify the Lord in multiple ways?
If the people we work with, ride the subway with, or see at church were asked, could they come up with three things about us that define our walk with Jesus?
Would we qualify to be three times a Christian?
Matthew 25:35-36 says:
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.”
Which of these things is Jesus saying about us? As many as three … or four … or even five?
Let’s make a list of ways we can be Christ-like to those around us.
- Work at a food bank once a month.
- Volunteer to deliver meals in your community.
- Donate unused clothes to a shelter.
- Read to disadvantaged children at the local library.
- Spend an afternoon encouraging people at a hospice center.
- Join a prison ministry and show up regularly.
You can do this. Start with one. Master that and see what else you can do.
Jesus will be your strength. Your reward will be the joy you bring to those you help.
The world needs Jesus, and they find him in us. Let’s start showing Christ’s love today.
