Part of good parenting is knowing when to say no.
- Let it cool before you eat it.
- Look both ways when crossing the street.
- No cookies before dinner.
- You may not flush the golf balls down the toilet.
- You cannot cut your hair, paint the turtle, lick the hamster … and the list goes on.
If our child doesn’t listen, we must apply penalties until they choose to follow our instructions.
Here are three times God applies his hand of correction to his children.
Example No. 1:
We correct the people we love. The rest we say, “Bleh. Don’t care.”
God says he does the same in Proverbs 3:12.
“For the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.”
Example No. 2:
Penalties fall on those who don’t meet our expectations. We want them to excel.
God’s commandments are not up for debate in Deuteronomy 8:5-6.
“Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you. So you shall keep the commandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.”
Example No. 3:
Those who refuse to “man up” to God’s standards will face severe penalties. Those who listen and change their ways will be rewarded.
God promises us rest in Psalm 94:12-13.
“Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law, to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.”
The Bible is not rocket science. It’s good parenting. We all want to raise our children to be the best they can be.
Let’s give in to God. His guiding hand will lead us home.
