Lip service is just that. Lip. Service.
If a waiter says he will bring us a spoon, and it never shows up, did we get service or lip service?
Our son assures us he will make his bed, and yet it doesn’t get done. Service or lip service?
Kindness to the poor and downhearted … service or lip service?
A promise to attend church … support the missionary … teach a Sunday school class … service or lip service?
God’s Word gives us 3 deeds we can perform to shout our obedience unto him, to offer him service and not just lip service.
Deed No. 1 is found in Deuteronomy 30:15-16.
“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, by loving the Lord your God, by walking in his ways, and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his rules, then you shall live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to take possession of it.”
If we want to prove that we love God, we will follow the principles outlined in the Bible. Our reward? We will be blessed in our possessions and finances.
Deed No. 2 is in Philippians 4:9.
“What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me — practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. ”
We must live as Christ lived; follow his example; model our lives after those of the apostles and leaders of the early church. Our reward? We will be filled with the peace only God can give.
Deed No. 3 is revealed in Matthew 5:19.
“Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
We are called to share the Good News of Christ. We can’t be afraid to speak of the good things God has done for us. Our reward? We will be honored in heaven.
Now’s the time to choose. Service or lip service? It’s our opportunity to shout our obedience to the Word of God.
We do it by adhering to the teachings found in the Bible.
Now’s our time to move forward in Jesus. Let’s do it!
