What is God’s most precious gift?
Life. Our threescore and ten. To open our eyes in the morning and have the day to use as we please.
Visit the grocery store. Read the paper. Earn a living … or not.
We choose … and deal with the consequences … but God says, “Here. My gift to you. Enjoy it in the way you see fit.”
And yet … life has a way of becoming a stumbling block to our happiness.
Mary never seems to get sick. John got the promotion (and we didn’t). Our house floods and our neighbor’s doesn’t.
Where’s the fairness? When do we get what we deserve? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?
Why do other people always get the good life, and I’m left with the dregs from the pot?
And God cautions us with Proverbs 14:30 (NIV):
“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”
You see, peace isn’t found in what’s happening around us. It’s not in our health (or the lack of it). It doesn’t come from a promotion or avoiding natural disasters.
We find peace and contentment when we choose to find it. Not where … when.
Remember God’s gift? Enjoy this day in the way you see fit.
Each day. That’s where we find our enjoyment. Not in what others have or what we think should be ours. That’s envy, and it “rots the bones,” meaning that it leaves us unhappy and bitter.
So, wake up, say, “Thank you, God, for my gift of today,” and fill it the way you wish. Take your grandchildren to the park. Cook a cake. Go to work. Retire early. Lay in bed.
It’s your choice.
Do you get to deal with the consequences? Oh, definitely. So, good choices are wise, but the day is yours.
Do what brings you peace, and you will renew the life that God gifts you each day.
