Two Songs to Lift You Up

The Song of Solomon in the biblical Old Testament is known as the Love Book.

It is essentially a collection of love poems. They celebrate love, joy, and finding connection between the human and spiritual sides of life.

And what is a song? That’s easy. It’s a poem set to music, hence why we call this book the SONG of Solomon.

Let’s look at two of these today.

The flowers appear on the earth;

The time of singing has come,

And the voice of the turtledove

Is heard in our land.

This wonderful verse is found in Song of Solomon 2:12 (NKJV) and speaks to that which is new and fresh. The first flowers of the season: daffodils, roses, and even flowering shrubs.

Have you seen the Dogwood growing wild in the forest? Before any other forest plant begins to put out leaves (also before the Dogwood), the tree bursts into a snow-like flowerscape of blossoms that take your breath away.

This verse says to sing with celebration, to echo the turtledove, for in our ebullient song, we return praise unto the Father for the gift of his beauty.

I am the rose of Sharon,

And the lily of the valleys.

Like a lily among thorns,

So is my love among the daughters.

Here we look to the Song of Solomon 2:1-2. Our Lord is likened to the flowers that fill the land with the sweet aroma of new life. Like the Dogwood, our Savior breaks forth in brilliant bloom while the dearth of winter still blankets the land.

This verse also likens our Lord’s love to the profuse abundance of the flowers that consume the countryside. His love is there for us at every turn, sweet-smelling and pleasant to the senses.

Sing! Sing! Your voice raised in rejoicing will lift your heart to new heights in Our Lord!

Sing! Sing! Sing to be lifted up!
