There’s a truism out there that we as Christians often don’t want to face.
It’s in the darkest room that the light shines brightest.
How clearly can we see the shining face of the Father when we live in sunshine every day?
Our bank account overflows. Our home is beautiful. Each of our children obeys us without question. Even our spouse makes the bed and picks up their underwear.
Who needs God when our life is perfect already?
It’s when we crash and burn that God’s presence lights our way most brightly.
Many of us are familiar with the Christian aspect of the reality show Duck Dynasty. Clean-cut family living. Prayers at mealtime. Taking a stand for faith.
Yet, a notable family member and show standout, Phil Robertson, shares the time that demons threatened to destroy his family and marriage, and he hit rock bottom. Only in the darkness could he sense the light of God shining through.
Psalm 100:4 (NIV) says:
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.”
Robertson stands on this verse, and it turns his life around. You can do the same. Gratitude and worship are powerful. Not only do they align our hearts with God’s, when we speak our praise unto God, his heart is softened towards us, and he desires to come to our aid.
We deepen our relationship with him.
Begin with thanking God each morning for his Gift of Today. Not what’s in it, not what you have planned, not how much of it you get done. Just for the day, for the opportunity to fill it up, whether it goes well or not.
That’s a start. You can move deeper later, but for now, just a start.
“Thank you, Father, for my gift of today. No matter how it goes or where it takes me, thank you.”
Now you know. Let’s get started.
