The Unattainable Ring

It is that sparkling gem in the storefront window that draws us in. The lights are bright, and it glitters and flashes, catching our attention. We want that ring.

Then we see the price. It is far beyond our reach. However, we return to the storefront again and again, just to admire what we cannot have.

One day we step inside to have a closer look. The gem comes out of the window and onto our finger, and in that moment we are sold. We dont mind a part-time job, cutting back on our discretionary spending, or even taking out a loan. We fall to our knees and plead for a reduction in price, if only we can walk out the door with that gem on our hand.

God is that gem, and we buy him with our praise. However, it is not rote words that he wants. Rather, it is the upwelling of our hearts that draws him to us. In Psalm 119:108, we learn to beseech the Lord to accept our praises. He has wearied of our trite phrases and repetitive honorifics. Instead, he wants us to draw to him with freewill offerings of praise. He wants us to come to him again and again, desiring him so much that we are willing to work a part-time job, cut back on our discretionary spending, and even take out a loan, in order to express our longing for him.

God wants to be that unattainable ring, that gem that we find so desirable, that we will fall to our knees and plead for the chance to allow him to come into our lives.

When we desire the Lord with all our heart, he will come to us, and he will teach us to follow him.
