What good things have come your way recently?
Has good news flooded your inbox? A message from an old friend?
Maybe “good things” means financial gain for you.
Has your credit card limit been raised? If so, that’s a pat on your back for managing your finances well.
How about your home? Is your yard green, your central air functioning properly, and your garage door operational?
Did your kids make it to the bus this morning? No one suspended this year?
What are our gifts from God? If we pay attention to a few key mega-evangelists, we should be luxuriating in a king-size home with a king-size bed and two king-size cars in the king-size garage.
THAT’S NOT WHAT GOD’S WORD PROMISES US.
Let’s find the truth regarding God’s gifts in Ecclesiastes 5:18-19.
“Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God.”
Now that we’ve opened God’s Word, let’s break it down to see what it tells us.
First, our enjoyment comes from the work we do. That’s right. We are to “eat and drink and find enjoyment in [our] toil.”
We can’t sit on the sofa and expect to have God’s blessing flow to us like a benefit check.
Second, we get to enjoy our king-size lifestyle if God chooses to bless us with it. It’s not ours by right just because we accept the salvation of the cross.
Our good gift from God is the life he’s given us to live, whether one of hard work or prosperous ease.
If we want wealth, well, the Bible tells us how to achieve that also. By hard work and the sweat of our brow.
Let’s change our way of thinking. Let’s begin to think like God.
