Set a glass of water in the freezer.
Leave it there for a few hours, long enough to coat the top with a solid layer of ice.
Then take a drink. You can’t, can you?
The water’s still in there, liquid and tasty, fresh and waiting on you. There’s a problem, though. There’s a layer of ice on the top and it’s in the way of what you need on the other side.
You can still drink the water … if you can get to it. The question is how.
That’s where God’s Word comes in. That water is the Joy of the Lord, and the ice is the spiritual distance between you and the Father of all creation.
Psalm 89:15-16 says:
“Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face, who exult in your name all the day and in your righteousness are exalted.”
You need to shake it up, punch a hole in the ice, and get access to what God has on tap for you.
Psalm 118:15 tells how it’s done.
“Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.”
We get God’s joy by jumping up and shouting for him.
- In the church, shout amen!
- At the breakfast table, call out, “Praise the Lord!”
- In your car, sing hallelujah at the top of your lungs.
- In your office, punch your hand into the air with a silent, “Glory!”
- On the way home, let your feet dance in exuberant praise.
You’re seeing it, now. You’re getting it. You can break through the ice to get to the joy of the Lord by exalting him in every situation.
When we get Jesus inside of us, we begin to feel really, really good through and through.
