Our Calling from God

When a call is placed on our lives, we think of it as a chore, something God expects of us that will take away from what we want to do.

What if it’s not that at all?

Think of a mother preparing dinner. She calls her family in, not because she wants to assign onerous duties to her children, but because she has something special to share. Roast beef, mashed potatoes, and apple pie. Her calling is a time for celebration, for her children to gather around and be blessed with the bounty of her table.

Deuteronomy 8:7 reveals the excess God wishes to reveal unto us:

“For the Lord your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills.”

This is more than just a favorable benediction. It’s more than a wish for prosperity. We’ll find the goodness of God springing out of valleys and hills. Everywhere we go, God will overflow his grace and bounty onto our lives. When we visit the bank, favorable rates will come our way. In the grocery store, we’ll catch the latest sales. The gas pump will be discounted just before we arrive. Our kids will phone home. Vacations will abound with beautiful weather.

We’ll find the goodness of God everywhere.

Now, before we dicker about whether God really changes all these things just for us, or whether our gratitude makes us more aware of the blessings that come our way is up to the individual. What can’t be argued is that when we follow God, we will discover his beauty, grace, and blessing surrounding us each day.

God calls us to gratitude, for when we’re thankful, our quality of attitude lifts us from our despair.
