There’s the old saying about not being able to see the forest for the trees.
Yeah, that’s an old one, but what it really tells us is that sometimes we get too used to the situation, and we miss out on the little things that can make our lives special. Opportunities for magic moments come and go, and we don’t realize they even happened. They’ve slipped through our fingers like water through a sieve, and we can’t get them back again.
Matthew 3:16 tells us of Jesus’ special moment:
“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.”
This was a moment of special significance for our Lord. This was a visual confirmation that God’s power resided upon Christ’s human form, and he was, indeed, God made flesh. It was also the beginning of his earthly ministry.
This wasn’t a moment to brush off. It was one to celebrate, and it has become a prime tenet of our modern Christian faith. It’s the reason we baptize our children and new Christians worldwide. It’s a symbol of the power of the Father coming to reside in us.
It’s important for us to celebrate every facet of our Christian experience. Mark them on a calendar. Have special parties. Talk about them over and over. Remind each other of how much Christ meant to us in that moment. Make each of them a moment of revelation, where we realize we’ve taken a step closer to Jesus, and we’ve formed a closer bond with him.
Now is our opportunity to make our relationship with Jesus the most important thing to us. It won’t happen if we let our special moments fade away. It’s time for us to come “straightway out of the water” and let the world see that we belong to Christ, fully and without reserve.
It will be our moment of revelation, and we will want to share it with everyone we meet.
When we make a point to celebrate Jesus, soon Jesus will be the reason we want to celebrate.
