God’s Incredible Amazing Greenhouse

Glass boxes shimmering in the sun.

Greenhouses are amazing. They can be simple structures tacked onto the side of a house, or magnificent pyramids like the Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid in Galveston, Texas. This massive steel and glass structure rises to ten stories and nourishes more than 1,700 exotic plant and animal species.

Yet God built a greenhouse even more amazing than Galveston’s Rainforest Pyramid.

Genesis 1:1 says:

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

This was the beginning of the foundation for the most massive greenhouse in all creation. This one would be over 8,000 miles from one side to the other, and take 24,000 miles to hike around the outside. Plus, it would reach six miles into the air, and contain examples of every exotic plant or animal in existence.

Genesis 1:20 shows us God had a plan:

“And God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.’ ”

God drew up his plans to populate his newly created greenhouse. He orchestrated his novice population with great care. He knew the creatures that would interact together well, and those that wouldn’t.

Genesis 1:21 begins the stocking process:

“So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”

Nothing was left to chance. Just as in the Rainforest Pyramid, certain types of life need specialized microenvironments. When we know what we’re doing, things snug together perfectly, and there is no error to be found.

Genesis 1:25 is God’s diversification across the vast landscapes of his greenhouse:

“And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.”

Life teems in this greenhouse we call Earth. There’s hardly a location where we cannot find at least some life. From the tops of our highest mountains to the depths of the coldest seas, God made sure every niche was filled.

Genesis 1:29 opens the doors and welcomes us inside:

“And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.’ ”

The primary benefits of a greenhouse are warmth during seasons of cold; flowers all year long; fresh greens, vegetables and fruit; and the opportunity to transplant seeds and increase our growing potential. The Earth does all of these things for us, God’s incredible, amazing greenhouse, shimmering in space, given to humanity for his creation to enjoy.

Earth is God’s magnificent gift to his most special creation, humanity. When we relish our world, he finds his pleasure in us.
