Dick Van Dyke was a master at stage presentation.
He could walk across a room, and he was water splashing from a bowl, fluid in his movements as he stumbled over ottomans and regained his footing.
His bones seemed made of gelatin, flexible and impervious to every hard hit. He went down, and he came up, right as rain, and ready for the next part in the skit to be played.
That’s what God does for us.
Life is constantly in our way. The ottomans are out there for us to stumble over, and down we go. Our limbs are jelly, we sprawl on the floor, and we don’t know how we’ll recover.
In ourselves, we can’t. We need a greater strength, a source of renewal that can overcome the bad things in our way.
Psalm 18:35 gives us our answer.
“You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great.”
Three victories come to us through this verse:
- We have the shield of God’s salvation. It’s ours. We can claim it, and it gives us protection from the evil one.
- We are supported by God’s right hand. He’s there to catch us. When we trip, he lifts us up and sets us on our feet again.
- We are made great through the gentleness of God. He is a loving God, and that’s exactly why he imbues us with his power and authority to defeat the world and its problems.
Let’s do a Van Dyke when life’s problems cause us to stumble. Let’s come back up with grace and style. God restores us, broken bones and all, if we choose to trust in him.
Our protection comes from the hand of our Father above.
