Airbag Christianity

We live in an ultra-safe world. Our Christmas lights have built-in circuit breakers. Personal watercraft devices have automatic shutdown switches. Even our credit card companies cushion us from unauthorized charges so that we never have to pay for someone else’s thievery.

We are surrounded by the airbags of our society. When our situation dictates it’s time to crash and burn, out pops an airbag, and we walk away with only minor scrapes and bruises.

Where are the airbags in our Christian walk? If we follow these instructions, they will become the airbags that keep us safe when we feel we are about to crash and burn.

Airbag #1: We are not to lose heart.

2 Corinthians 4:16 tells us that our situation need not concern us. Our marriage may be failing, our health might crumble around us, but those are no more than symptoms of our human condition.

Our real truth is found in our spirit, for through God, we are being renewed day by day.

Airbag #2: We are to love one another.

Romans 13:8-10 speaks to the core tenet of our spiritual faith. We are indeed to follow all the commandments given in Genesis. However, when we perform all these, we have simply done the most important one.

We must love our neighbors as much as we love ourselves.

When we love our neighbors, we have fulfilled all the tenets of God’s commands, and we will be woven together in like faith with our brothers in Christ.

Airbag #3: We are to serve only Jesus.

Matthew 6:24 reveals the true core of a strong spiritual walk with Jesus. We cannot serve more than one master. If we love money more than God, we will be led astray every time the issue of money comes up.

When we make our top priority anything other than God, then it means God has taken second place in our lives. When we put God in second place, we have disabled the airbags in our Christian walk. When hard times come our way, there will be nothing to cushion the crash. We may not survive, and the fault will be ours.

God’s Word shows us how to walk with him in complete safety. When we do not lose heart, love one another, and serve only Jesus, we will truly be blessed with Airbag Christianity.
