No one is only one person. While at work we may be an accountant, but at home, we are a wife and a spouse. At church we are a Sunday school teacher and choir member, yet we are a master gardener in the eyes of our garden club associates.
Who are we in the eyes of Christ?
Romans 8:1-5 gives us a description of the person we are to become if we want to wear the hat of Christ.
Verse #1: We must turn our back on the carnal world.
There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
When we come to Jesus and pray the sinner’s prayer, we cast aside our previous life, turning our back on the world.
Verse #2: We must declare victory over sin and death.
The law of the spirit has made us free from the law of sin and death.
Christ’s death on the cross broke the chains that had us bound. Our victory was assured as he hung on that rugged tree.
Verse #3: We must trust in Jesus for our spiritual strength.
God sent his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to condemn sin in the flesh.
When Jesus gave his life on the cross, he imbued us with his power, so that in our own battles against sin, we would know victory.
Verse #4: We must place spiritual matters as our top priority in life.
Jesus came that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
“Walk” refers to the way we order our days. We are to plan each waking moment in the light of God’s redemptive plan.
Verse #5: We must walk each day in full obedience to the Spirit.
They of the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they of the Spirit mind the things of the Spirit.
What does the Spirit desire of us? Alternately, we can ask ourselves, what would Jesus do in our place? If we can answer that question and follow through on our honest answer, we will be able to easily walk in full obedience to the Spirit.
During our days we wear many hats, but the most important hat we will ever don is the one that belongs to Christ.
