Freedom Without Bounds

Where is freedom to be found? The eagle soars in the endless sky, and the dolphin swims the vast ocean. There are no natural barriers to where they can go.

Yet, every place is the world is not safe for them.

Our spiritual life is the same. When we come to Christ, we are as the eagle and the dolphin. We can fly with our wings spread wide, letting the currents of the sky take us where they will. Or we can swim to the depths of the sea, for there is no place we can go that we can avoid the presence of the everlasting God.

Yet not every place is safe for the Christian’s spiritual well-being. Where do we find our freedom in the spiritual world?

The Scriptures offer us three choice nuggets about the spiritual freedoms given to us by the Lord.

Choice Nugget #1:

All people are born into a spiritual prison, and the only key is Jesus.

John 8:32 tells us that once we know the truth, that very same truth will set us free in the Spirit.

We can be brought up with strong moral underpinnings, and we can know how to do the right thing, but until we accept the truths taught by Jesus, we will always have spiritual bars on our souls. It is by believing on the risen Savior that we find the freedom that Jesus brings.

Choice Nugget #2:

The devil will try to steal our freedom from us.

John 10:10 tells us that there is a thief who comes only to steal, kill, and destroy what God has made good. However, Jesus came to give us life so that we may live in abundance.

When God created the earth, he told his creation to enjoy all the good things he had given unto them. Yet, the devil twisted God’s gifts even in the Garden of Eden. He still tries to do so, offering us that which seems good but is not in the will of God. We must search out our desires to keep them in line with those of the Father.

Choice Nugget #3:

Being free in Christ is not really about freedom.

Romans 6:18 tells us that once we are set free, we then become slaves to righteousness.

When we become slaves to righteousness, we no longer have the freedom to sin. We are in bondage to that which Christ demands of us. We are required to cast our worldly desires and aspirations aside in order to follow the one who hung upon the tree.

We are completely free in Christ, but we are only free when we remain completely within the bounds of Christ.
