Salvation Business

We all have things we must do. Work. Pay bills. Cook. Eat. Provide for our loved ones. Put gas in the car.

Then there’s the fun stuff, like taking the boat out, a night on the town, or birthday parties.

To get to the fun stuff, sometimes we must take care of the not-so-fun side of things. We must take care of business, so that we can play when the work is done.

Even in the church.

Think about it. It’s fun to listen to the choir, but how many practices did it take to master that difficult song? The choir took care of business so that the rest of the congregation could arrive late and skip out early. Ouch.

What about that mission trip? Who planned it, organized the fundraisers, and kept track of the bank accounts? Someone had to buy the airline tickets, schedule our hotels, and make certain everything lined up for each person along the way.

Do we enjoy showing up for the Wednesday church supper? We shell out $10, but who shelled out their time in the kitchen? Who mops the floor once we move on to our other activities? Who empties the dishwasher and puts things away?

Ouch.

Genesis 3:19 reminds us:

“By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Whether we live in a town house, a trailer house, or a lake house, life will take a toll on us. We have responsibilities, and at times, it’s not easy. It’s up to us to look for opportunities to make life easier for someone else.

It’s nice to show up on Sunday and relax while the choir delivers a masterful performance. Mission trips are more satisfying when all we need to do is minister. And oh, but is supper better when we don’t have to worry about cleanup. Yet someone has had to take care of the details so we could enjoy our good time.

John 3:16 says:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Jesus, taking care of business…

Hebrews 9:27 warns us:

“And... it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.”

It’ll one day be our time to take care of business…

Revelation 21:4 is our good news:

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Our business will be completed, and we’ll live with the Father for all time.

If we want to enjoy ourselves in heaven, we must take care of our salvation before God calls us home.

Excerpt of the Day

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
