Seeking the Wrong Jesus

We love the story of the loaves and the fishes. The boy offering all he had to Jesus, only to have it multiplied to feed a crowd of thousands, fills us with an awesome respect for the majestic power of God.

It’s also the basis of many an evangelist’s plea for donations to the cause of Jesus. If we send in even a small amount, God will use it to spread the gospel across the world.

Yet, we cannot chase Jesus because he multiplies our gifts unto him.

John 6:22-24 paints a picture of a people who would do anything to find Jesus. We read that the people who had witnessed the sharing of the loaves and the fishes looked for Jesus, only to find him and his disciples gone. They then hired boats to carry them to Capernaum, seeing for Jesus.

John 6:26 gives us Jesus’ response when the people found him:

“Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”

What Jesus do we seek, the one who saves souls, or the one who provides a better job so that we can improve our lifestyle? Do we chase after Jesus to offer ourselves unto him, or do we expect him to be our cash machine, flooding us financially for our benefit?

What Jesus do we seek, the true son of God, who came to the needy and the destitute, or the one who gives us flashy watches and fast cars, as we minister in his name?

In Verse 26, Jesus goes on to say that we shouldn’t labor for that which perishes, but for that which is eternal. We want to search for the Jesus that offers us eternal life. He’s the only one that counts.

When we reach for God, let’s make sure we receive salvation as our prize.
