Unclaimed Freight

Abandoned. That’s the very idea of unclaimed freight.

Sometimes it’s as simple as a company not wanting to ship an item twice and refusing returned merchandise. Other times the packaging has been damaged, and insurance has paid off on an item. Whole loads can be written off in their entirety by an insurer if just one portion is affected, and a savvy buyer can get thousands of pounds of undamaged merchandise if they’re willing to cart away the few items that are unusable.

Unclaimed Freight for Sale. We see the sign on nondescript warehouse buildings across our cities, someone hoping to make a buck, turning another’s castoffs into a money-making proposition. It’s often really good stuff, too, well worth our visit for an inspection.

What does that say about damaged people? Do we become no more than damaged freight, written off by the world, and useful to no one? Or do we feel we’re labeled as damaged only by association? We’ve done nothing wrong, but our spouse or our sibling has, and we’re suffering the consequences along with them.

God knows no unclaimed freight. Romans 10:20 tells us:

“Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, ‘I have been found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.’ ”

The context of this verse is that when Isaiah spoke those words, Israel was at the pinnacle of her success. She was recognized before the world as the beloved of God, his chosen people.

Yet, Isaiah proclaims that there are yet more people to whom God will reveal himself.

God will love others who are not his chosen people. How amazing is that? It tells us one thing, over and above everything else.

To God, there is no such thing as unclaimed freight. We are all precious to him, no matter whether we seek him or not.

We don’t have to even recognize his presence for him to wrap his hands of love around us. Why? Because we are all his children, every last human. He envelopes us with his caring nature, waiting for us to recognize his presence and turn to him.

Everyone who reaches out will find God just at the tips of their fingers, at any point day or night.
